What is Coaching?

Working with a coach is the bridge between where you are today and where you want to be tomorrow.

The life you want is not only possible, but it's closer than you think.

The moment you decide to step out of your comfort zone, it's going to feel difficult, overwhelming, and scary. Most people will use this as a reason to go back to sitting on the sidelines of their life. This is the feeling of being 'stuck'.

But a coach helps you see through this mental noise and shows you the way forward. He keeps you accountable to your future.

My Coaching Style

I am a guide, not a guru. By asking powerful questions, I help you reveal your blind spots, and offer a fresh perspective that you haven't considered before. I tailor my approach to your individual needs, but at the core, my style is:

  • Action-oriented
  • Solution-focused
  • Collaborative
  • Encouraging
  • Empathetic
  • Thought-provoking
  • Honest

And we'll have some fun and laughs along the way.  Where appropriate, I will share my own personal experiences to help offer insights into your own.

I have worked with Michael for 6 months and he is amazing. I had never worked with a coach before and in all honesty was not sure what to expect. He was very professional and explained how he delivers coaching and I found myself able to share honestly with him, be accountable and take action. I came to Michael with 3 key areas I wanted to focus on and was so impressed with how transformation has occurred in our time working together. What I greatly appreciated was how I could discuss all elements of what I needed with Michael, as a gay man, I was able to discuss relationship goals alongside professional and personal goals openly and received support which helped to improve my self awareness and drive increase in confidence and belief in myself. The greatest benefit of coaching has been the accountability to myself. Learning the tools to keep myself focused on my goals and prioritise the decisions for the longer term. I can not recommend Michael highly enough! If you have the right mindset you shall achieve great things with Michael by your side!

Michael’s nuggets of wisdom are (at first glance) small; seemingly straight-forward; perhaps even common sense; but they are worth their weight in gold. They inspire a change in thinking, motivate growth and can change the course in my internal story that results in far better outcomes than would have been the case without his input. I’m grateful for the mind shift he has created for me.

Michael made me feel comfortable and at ease, he allowed me to open up about what I wanted to and at my own pace. He gently guided me to interesting discoveries about my thinking, my actions and my life in general. But he also gave me some tough love when it was required! Nothing was off limits, and we could safely discuss any topic, however painful or embarrassing. I can honestly say that he has had a lasting impact on my life. I spent six months talking to Michael every Wednesday, and now that it's over, I really miss it. He simply starts feeling like a friend rather than a coach - he's that good.

When people ask me why I work with Michael, a life coach, this is what I say: Athletes work with a trainer to be better in their sport. Musicians study with a mentor to improve their craft. Students learn with a teacher to grow. If you want to be better at life, If you want to learn about yourself and how to be a better you, if you want to change your career or improve any aspect of your life, get a life coach like Michael. He helped me achieve every one of these things.

Working with Michael has been a truly transformative experience for me. Michael’s approach to coaching is methodical, supportive, authentic and completely tailored to you. I took huge steps forwards in my life in a few short months and on occasion when those steps felt like they were in the wrong direction, Michael really has your back. More importantly, he gives you the tools to have your own back. As a coach he’s intuitive, supportive and generous with his own experiences. He creates a safe space for you to navigate life’s challenges and will hold you accountable to keep you moving forward towards the goals you’ve identified. Coaching with Michael is a real investment in yourself and one which I wish I’d made a lot earlier. I can’t recommend him enough.

 coaching for gay men

GAY MEN face unique challenges.

Despite enjoying unprecedented rights and freedoms, gay men suffer from disproportionately higher rates of addiction, loneliness, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

On top dealing with sexual minority stress, many of us struggle with poor body image, low self-esteem, and have a hard time developing meaningful relationships within the community.  As much as I love our gay culture, it can be isolating and oppressive for many.

My own experience navigating these unique challenges allows me to more deeply understand your own. I provide a safe and supportive, judgment-free space to speak candidly about topics that you may not otherwise feel comfortable sharing. Read more

Frequently Asked Questions

how does private coaching work?

During private coaching, we have 1-on-1 virtual sessions weekly or bi-weekly.  Sessions last up to 60 minutes and are conducted either in person, via video conferencing, or on the phone. I will facilitate the session, but they will be collaborative in nature.

Do you only work with gay men?

No. I will work with anyone as long as we're a good fit for each other. We determine this together during a free consultation call (phone call) where we get to know each other. Think of it like a first date without the awkward parts.

Are you certified?

Yes. I am certified with the International Association of Wellness Professionals (IAWP).  The IAWP Wellness Coach Certification program is a globally-recognized program CCE accredited through the International Coaching Federation (ICF). In addition, they have accreditations from the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP), the Canadian Health Coach Alliance, the Canadian Association for Integrative Nutrition and are approved by the UK Health Coach Association.

what's the difference between coaching and therapy?

Coaching and therapy both deal with mental health and our work can overlap. Check out this post for an in-depth explanation.

Coaching is an action-oriented, solution-focused approach to overcoming a challenge or achieving a result in your life. Therapists tend to work with more severe issues to diagnose and prescribe treatment, whereas coaches do not. If our sessions determine that you would be better suited for therapy, I will gladly refer you to some of my favourite LGBTQ+ affirmative mental health care providers.

Keep in mind that you can work with both a coach and a therapist. When it comes to your mental health, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. If you're unsure what you need, our consultation call will help me better understand your challenge so that I can guide you in the right direction.

do you offer flexible payment plans?

You can pay for the coaching package in monthly payments or in full up front. We can discuss payment options prior to onboarding.

For students, I offer a student discount with a valid Student ID.

How Do I Know if Coaching Is Right for Me?

If you have a challenge in your life that you can't seem to overcome, coaching is right for you. If you're unsure, we will talk it out during our consultation call. I will be able to better understand your challenge and whether I am best suited to help you. If your situation would be better handled by another coach or mental health professional, I will be happy to refer you.

how long does it take to see results?

That is entirely up to you.  Just like a fitness coach doesn't lift the weights for you, I cannot do the work for you. I will give you all the tools and resources at my disposal to help you achieve your goals, but I cannot use them for you.

If you're committed to taking responsibility for your results, and you're willing to learn and grow, you will feel excited and motivated after just one session. From there, anything is possible.

Workshops & Speaking Engagements

I conduct wellness workshops and speaking engagements for the LGBTQIA community and our allies, including corporate events. Contact me to inquire.
